Dialogue with Boko Haram now, Ajibola tells FG

Former President of the World Court and former Attorney-General of the federation, Prince Bola Ajibola (SAN) on Saturday, asked President Goodluck Jonathan to dialogue with Boko Haram immediately in order to stop the on-going attack on innocent Nigerians.

Prince Ajibola also called for a
separation of the office of the Attorney-General and the Ministry of Justice for effective justice administration in the country.

He gave the advice at the launching of a book, “The Attorney-General: Chronicles and Perspectives” written by Olumide Babalola.

The launch was held to mark his 79th birthday and presentation of law e-products by Law Pavilion at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Prince Ajibola, speaking on the Boko Haram insurgency, said that dialogue was the way out if the killing of innocent Nigerians by the Islamic sect must stop.

“I have always advocated dialogue. Even when a war is fought, at the end of the war, the winner will still need to discuss with the loser to find solution to the whole dispute.

“I think there is still need for the
government to come together with Boko Haram to get them to understand that enough is enough.

“If they refuse to grant amnesty to them, they will come back and continue to do it again and again and it will not help the nation”, he stressed.

He added that granting an amnesty to the group would help put an end to ᶥᵗˢ renewed onslaught on innocent Nigerians.

“The granting of amnesty to militants in the Niger-Delta has brought relative peace and stability to the area”, he noted.

He also advised that the office of the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice should be separated, adding that “one has to do with the ministry of justice and government of the day, while the other one is like ombudsman who has to deal with the judicial protection of the people in the nation as the attorney- general.”

Recalling the interference he went
through with the government when as Attorney General, he wanted to take former Petroleum Minister, Prof Tam David West to court on behalf of the people of Nigeria.

“Though this might be difficult. I faced that when I was the Attorney General and Minister for Justice.

I had wanted to take Prof. David West to court and the government was against it.

Meanwhile, I was trying to exercise your right in my position as the AG and Minister for Justice

“So we must seperate them otherwise one might compromise the other”, he added.
